Counting Down to Life After ED!

.: day 73 :.

Someone dropped by our home late this morning just before we were about to head out for lunch. This someone was a messenger and he had with him a package to deliver to me from Sophia!! I cannot describe how much it made my day. And to have it come on my ‘weigh-in’ day. It felt like God totally planned it to happen this way so that I would have some encouragement over the dreaded dietitian appointment. I dread it still because I know I have gained yet more weight and while I’d like to rejoice, it really is a bittersweet kind of feeling. Sweet because I know I am succeeding against the ED. Bitter because there are still remnants of the ED within me that I cannot deny.

There is another reason as to how I believe God is working in my life right now. Not only did I receive Sophia’s package today, yesterday, I received an e-mail from June Cheong – you know, the journalist from Mind Your Body, who interviewed me a few weeks ago? Well, she asked me to verify some of my quotes so I am assuming that the article will be out really soon. Perhaps this week or next week’s issue. While I am excited, I am anxious as well because I know that this means that my personal struggle is being thrown into the spotlight. There will be a mention of my blog I think which means more pressure to recover. I say that God is working in my life because I know that I am now around the ’scary’ weight that usually halts my recovery and throws me back into the evil world of ED. So, it is obvious that He timed all this such that the publishing of the article will mean that I cannot afford to fall back, especially in front of so many. Because He knows that I have a lot of pride. Because He knows that this is one darn good way of pushing me to recover. Because He knows that I will not allow myself to fall flat on my face.

Anyway, I bet you all must be scratching your heads over what I received from Sophia and let me tell you, her package was wickedly awesome!! As soon as I opened it, the smile that was already on my face just grew so wide, I swear I looked like the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland.

Totally love the caption! x)

Totally love the caption! x)

Thankfully though, I’m still that little bit hotter than the Cheshire Cat! Lol.

P1010237-copy

The huge smile on my face was a result of these super cute socks that I’m guessing were definitely from Korea! Imagine that! I’ve never been to Korea or the US but all 5 pairs of these socks have been to both, so in a funny way, they probably have the essence of Korea and the US weaved within them. I’m no K-Drama fan but I swear the dude on the right-most pair of socks looks like Bae Yeong Jun but without glasses.

BYJ

No? Haha. Hmm.. Maybe not.

What got me even more excited were these:

P1010238-copy

2 Clif Bars and a Luna Bar. OH MY GAAAAAAWD! Sophia sending these over were totally God answering my prayers! I have been dying to get my hands on these babies since I first saw them on some of the US blogs I have come across. They sell Lara Bars here but only like, 2 or 3 different flavours. But no Luna Bars and definitely no White Chocolate Macadamia! And Clif Bars are non-existent here either so I am itching to try them. Sophia sent me Banana Nut Bread and Carrot Cake Clif Bars which sound super! This surprise package really made me feel all Warm and Fuzzy (Warm Fuzzy!!) inside, and really gave me the added motivation I have been seeking the past week or so. Thanks so much sweetie for the Warm Fuzzy!! Hehe.

P1010239-copy

And the card Sophia sent had me goose-bumping all over in a good way. Have you ever been so touched by the actions of another, by a song being sung, or by words of encouragement that it made you have goosebumps? I have a couple of times, and this was one of them. And I truly truly am grateful for the effort put into this parcel. It reminds me of how much our actions can impact others. The things we do, the things we say… they all impact the people around us and it can be in both negative and positive ways. People often do not realise how much weight their behaviours and attitudes can carry but in this case, I feel so much more supported in my recovery and I feel that even as it is getting more daunting, I am really not alone in this battle. Sophia’s package as well as the e-mail from June served as evidence of God’s wondrous presence in my life – His calling out to me not to give up, His encouragement to me that I am not going to let the jitters overwhelm and overpower me this time. He knows my weakness in being proud, but He is using this exact weakness and turning it into strength – strength for me to recover. And I will. x)

Breakfast: Kashi’s Go Lean Cereal Mix with Yoghurt

P1010222-copy

Lunch: Sada (Plain) Thosai at Raj Restaurant

P1010232-copy

P1010235-copy

Raj’s Thosai was nice and crisp, while not being overly thick or too thin either. I quite liked it apart from the middle portion that was a little on the oily side, but I guess that is normal in order to get the thosai crispy. I guess Madras Woodlands Ganga is still my preferred choice especially with their attentive waiters and flawless customer service.

P1010236-copy

The condiments that went with my plain thosai were pretty good. They gave a large serving of coconut chutney which had a milky flavour to it. Dipped in the coconut chutney followed by the sour sambar, the thosai gave way to a sharp spicy-sourness of the sambar and the mildness of the chutney. I quite liked their coriander chutney as well although they only gave a small dollop of it.

Compared to Madras Woodlands Ganga, I would say that Raj can only come in second best in my opinion. Madras Woodland’s sambar still rocks with their generosity in the amount of vegetables they serve inside – cubed eggplant, radish, carrots, onions… And their chutneys are more suited to my tastebuds. On top of that, their thosai tends to be cooked such that there is hardly a tinge of oiliness, making for a satisfyingly great meal.

Still, Raj was teeming with customers this lunchtime, many of whom ordered their Thali as well as Naan bread with various sides. Their Naans looked enticing but we figured that Madras would be better for us since we can order a set, and they provide condiments just nice enough for one person, AND we get free top ups. At Raj, we would have to order their sides separate from the naan, meaning that the portions would be rather big as well as fixed, and we would probably only be able to order two sides or else it would be too much.

Tea: 1/2 a Laughing Cow Cheese Waffle and 1/2 a Peanut Butter Waffle

I had my waffles before my dietitian appointment this afternoon. This time, we ordered one Plain Waffle and one Peanut Butter Waffle.

P1010243-copy

What Dad and I did was we brought two triangles of Laughing Cow Cheese along with us and smothered a wedge on each half of the plain waffle. The light saltiness of the cheese melded well with the sweet, pandan waffle. It was really, really good I tell you. Even better than the Chocolate Waffle. BUT not better than Peanut Butter Waffle!!

P1010245-copy

My Peanut Butter Waffle was gorgeously delicious as usual! The creamy, gooeyness was divine and I savoured every single glop of it together with the lightly crisp waffle to the very last bite. What I realised today as I ate my Peanut Butter Waffle though, was that had I eaten a whole one, I would have felt rather heaty thereafter due to the peanut butter. So in a way, sharing the waffle with Dad today, and on previous occasions, was the right decision even though I love love love peanut butter!

I saw June, the dietitian who has taken over YihS, for appointment today and although my weight was ’sub-optimal’, I still think it was close enough to optimal. She was pretty happy with me and basically spent the half an hour showering me with words of encouragement since she knows that this is the point at which I start quaking in my boots. June’s pretty nice though but honestly? I really miss YihS… =( Anyway, June’s alright with my current meal plan so far although she just asked for me to make sure that I continue eating properly, and not fall into the habit of counting calories again or restricting.

I’ll be seeing her next Thursday because plans have been made for me to fly to the UK!! I’ll be flying off Sunday (14 June) evening for about 2 weeks and I can hardly wait!! So I see June (the dietitian, not the month!) next week, go away for 2 weeks, and then I’ll have my following appointment with her once I’m back around the 1st week of July. Tomorrow, I see Dr. S. I don’t really see the point because I have already had my weigh-in this week but I guess it is probably to assess my mental state and to make sure that I am doing well. Hopefully I will not have to wait more than an hour to see her.

Dinner: Porridge with Fish, Red Spinach with Prawns, and Braised Peanuts

P1010248-copy

Mum made porridge for dinner which we had with Ikan Kurau (Threadfin Fish), steamed in some special sauce from Jipson that we got from Melaka. OOOOOohh! The fish was amazing!! The marinade was wonderfully spicy and had tom yum undertones, as well as an asam (sour) flavour with a hint of laksa leaves. Good stuff!!

The Red Spinach was stir-fried with some prawns. Just like Popeye, I could eat spinach everyday! But unlike him, I like mine fresh and not out of a can! Yummyyyy!

Nightcap: Assorted Japanese Tidbits

P1010251-copy

I decided that since I had some of these leftover from when I opened them to try, I might as well have them first instead of opening new packets. x) Dad tried the Almond with Cheese on Japanese Rice Cracker and really liked it. After chomping through 5 of these mini bites, Dad excited stated that he plans to buy a whole packet for just himself to eat. Lucky for him though, they sell slightly bigger versions of these crackers that are individually wrapped. Not very environmentally-friendly though, but more satisfaction for Dad in a mouthful.

Personally, I like the Light Vanilla Wafers with Chocolate Cream the most. Hehe. However, I’m crazy about the almonds they have topping the other two biscuits – crunchy, toasted almonds… Mmm..Yet another amazing creation of God’s!!

Ah yes. And today marks the day that I can start incorporating some exercise into my week based on my ‘contract’ with Mum and Dad as I have hit target weight #1 as officially recorded by the ED team. So now I get to exercise thrice a week but not too vigorously and not too extensively. Just some exercise to tone up a little and to strengthen my muscles. I have to remember that I am exercising because of the joy I derive from it, the desire to live healthily and NOT to ‘purge’ out the calories I have taken in, NOT to lose weight. I’m so excited!

  1. WoW! What an AMAZINGGG package from Sophia! I’m awfully jealous. Haha. Jk (:

I’m so happy and excited for your UK trip? Will you be staying in the countryside with rolling pastures and undulating hills? That’s the image UK conjures in my mind!

Lara bars are sold here in Singapore?? Where are they sold at???

    Comment by sab | June 3, 2009 | Reply

    • Aww.. Hehe. I’ll do a nice package for you too from the UK! I’ll see what tidbits they have around there that are specific to the British so don’t be too sad. *hugs* And nope, I’ll be in the city so no countryside, no cows, no sheep, no horsies.. no. There are a few farm houses with horses near where I live but not much of those pretty green hills. I’ll take pictures of the area where I live over there. x)

And yup. Lara bars are sold at NTUC Finest I think. Mainly all the organic food places. But they only have a few flavours. I think they have Key Lime Pie and I’m not sure what else.

      Comment by nattietan | June 3, 2009 | Reply

      • oh, they’re also sold at Jason’s Marketplace at Raffles City :)
They have around…6 flavours? I remember seeing key lime, banana, pistachio, cherry pie and one or 2 others. But they’re so expensive! I had to fork out THREE DOLLARS FOR A BAR!!! Can’t bear to eat it yet though, haha, because it’s so expensive, so i’m saving it for a special occasion.

        Comment by Maggie | June 4, 2009 | Reply

        • Oh yeah! I’ve seen them at the Marketplace at Raffles City too. Let me know how they taste once you try them! haha. Maybe I’ll get a few to try on the plane journey to UK. But $3 a bar is pretty steep. Have you tried the Wallaby bars? Or the Soy Joy ones? There’s quite a bit of publicity on Soy Joy now and I’m tempted to try but their adverts were kind of tacky so I got rather put-off. Haha.

  2. Hello there. Stumbled upon your blog by chance yesterday – I must say your description of your battle against E.D. is very encouraging! Coincidentally, I think I saw you today – were you wearing a blue sleeveless top, sitting at Housemen’s Cafe at around 3.30pm today? Either way, keep it up! Hope you’ll be back to your normal weight soon. x

    • Haha yeah!! I was there. Sorry I looked super grumpy. Waiting time for the doctor is always super stressful and frustrating!! Hmm.. were you one of the girls waiting for appointment as well?

      • Naw I was already on my way out and dropped by to get a waffle. Btw, do try kopi-c from Housemen’s Cafe. It’s really fragrant. x

You should have said HI!!! x)) Next time perhaps. Oh. And have you tried Housemen’s Canteen’s Malay Food? Another must-try at SGH.

    • I’m super excited about the UK!! WOrried? Not so much. Happy? Very much so! x) Although I dread the plane ride because I totally hate long plane journeys. I’ll be taking the big Singapore Airlines plane though which will be uber comfy. They have huger seats and Video-on-Demand. It’ll be nice to have chillax on the plane and hopefully there will not be too much turbulence. I freak out when there’s turbulence!

It’d be cool visiting the US! And yes. Hopefully you’ll be there to take me around when I do go by! x) That would be so incredible! Hehe.. So work hard dearie, then all our plans can fall into place!

  4. Nat! You’re going to UK? What fun! I’m green-eyed ;-p

You simply must blog about your holiday there. I miss being in UK when I was studying there for a short while. while part of UK will you be in?

May I suggest something? You are always having your usual milk as night cap for added calcium right? For your couple of weeks in UK why don’t you swap that with cream? Any dairy in fact. They taste absolutely heavenly there. I remember sinking my teeth into my first eclair and was transported to cloud nine. It’s so light and milky. Not like those we get from here that are sweetened, theirs are fluffy and so gooooooooooooood. Not cloying at all. MmmmmMMMmmMmmmMMmmm….

    • My maternal family live in boring’ old gloomy London but that also means, Bond Street and Picadilly Circus which mean shopping! Selfridge’s!! Hehe. But I don’t plan on shopping too much though. And we’re more towards Greater London so going into the city will be rather pricey and you know how unreliable their public transport is! Hmm.. whereabouts did you study in the UK?

Hmm.. About the cream. Haha. That’s one thing I don’t like. I don’t mean it is little bits but cream itself.. not so much. When I was 10, a friend of mine’s father brought her birthday cake into school and it was loaded with cream. The first few bites were good but subsequently, I remember wanting to throw up towards the end and from that day, whenever I think of fresh cream, I shudder. Especially in its purest form in big dollops. But the milk I am taking right now has 4x calcium concentrate which is what I need to build up the calcium storage in my body. It’s really tasty too which is an added bonus. x) Thanks for the suggestion though. I may try to incorporate my cheese into my diet when I’m in the UK!

  5. wow. Who is this Sophia? She sounds pretty darn super to me xD
*HUGS* You deserve all the happiness and warm fuzziness you can get, Nat! And I was wondering why it was taking so long for the package to reach you, because the person promised me at the most 6 days…but now I see it was God’s perfect timing…to cheer you up at a scary day! How amazing He is, huh?
And I’m SOOO excited for you for your trip to UK, though I’ll be stuck here in US myself…but haha, shall live vicariously through you! Take pics of your grandparents too! I would love to see how they look like…are they Christians too? And of course, the glorious food…though I heard UK food really sucks. My friend went there for vacation and she said she almost starved because the food is horrible. But you’re probably familiar with all the good foods there, right? and the supposedly better-than-India’s Indian food…(difficult to believe those ang-mohs like their curries so much!!)
and YES!!! exercise! that’s great! It will help you get those endorphins going and a great stress reliever! So you’re gonna take kickboxing? yoga?
anyway, I think I’m even happier than you are that you are happy, if that makes sense at all. LOL!
p.s. try your best not to spend too much money on me at UK! I know, it’s irresistible, but you must fight the urge, ok? lol!

    Comment by burpexcuzme | June 3, 2009 | Reply

    • I’m still waiting for my package to reach you and now I’m getting anxious that maybe it’ll turn up at your doorstep looking miserable, with the box all dented. I shall have to pray it reaches you soon and intact!! x) Yes dearie! I’ll take pictures with my lovely Grandpa and Grandma! They go to church and they believe although they aren’t baptised yet. I think Grandma’s thinking of getting baptised though so Grandpa will possibly follow suit as well! Hehe. And yes, UK food.. isn’t all the great. No wait, they do pretty good pies, and fish and chips.. and apparently curries, as you say. Hehe.

Well.. I can’t do kickboxing or yoga just yet. That’s going to have to wait until I reach Target Weight #2 but for now, I can splash around in the pool and do some rollarblading – leisurely of course. I think yoga’s good though but well, it wasn’t featured in this part of the ‘agreement’ so it will have to wait.

And yes! The Pound Sterling is crazily strong right now. I’ll probably buy a few bits and bobs but there’s nothing really that I’m looking to buy or shop for. Apart from food! Hehe.

  6. Hi! This is my first ever comment on your blog, even though i’ve been reading your posts since a couple of days ago :]
Your blog is really great motivation and your wonderful efforts to live life to the fullest and not let bad thoughts get in the way makes me really really respect you!

    :D
Do post on how the luna bars and cliff bars taste! Really wish that they would sell them in Singapore though :( Lucky you! You really have great friends who care so much about you!

    okay, haha, that’s all :D

ps: is the kashi cereal good? i’ve been wanting to get it since i spotted the boxes in cold storage, but the price is quite steep!

    Comment by Maggie | June 3, 2009 | Reply

    • I will definitely definitely review the Luna and Clif bars! Hehe. I know right? Singapore’s so boring in terms of variety but I guess if they had all these bars, we’d still be complaining because there’ll be other stuff we won’t have still. Anyway, the Kashi Cereal is pretty good but I added crushed nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins and cranberries into the basic cereal to spice it up a bit. I like it better like that. Taste wise, the cereal alone if still nice albeit a little boring. Hehe. It is rather on the pricey side but probably worth a try, although it does depend on the kind of cereal you prefer. It does have a hint of sweet, but it is very subtle, with a rather nutty, bran-y taste. oOh and the rice-bran (those longish ones in the cereal) are nice and crunchy. I’d say go for it, but play around with it a little as well and it actually can go a long way. x)

Anyway, thanks for the compliment. I try to stay motivated but it doesn’t always work. And you know what? A lot of my motivation comes from people like you who send me such encouraging words so really, thank you!!

  7. Nat, I am so happy for u! You can now start enjoy the freedom of doing exercising for pleasure. Also, I look forward to ur blogs written on the UK trip.

The socks are all so cute! The Clif bars have interesting flavours. Never heard of them before. Ya… I can relate to the warm and fuzzy feeling that fills up the inside of ur body when you receive such a thoughtful present from a friend. I have felt this way before too. =)

Btw, I don’t usually buy the papers. So can you pls notify me if u know exactly when the article will be published? I hope to be able to read it.

Definitely a Thursday since Mind Your Body pull-outs come with Thursday issues of The Straits Times. x) And I will definitely be updating this blog while I’m in the UK so there’ll definitely be more interesting things to look forward to.. I hope. Lol.

  9. No laaaa. Hehe. I’d never think of you as a stalker. Afterall, it’s not like I’m Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie who would be bound to have stalkers. x) I love Housemen Corner’s Peanut Waffles!!!! The creamy, salty peanut butter with their piping hot, slightly crispy waffles! I always try to plan my appointments around tea time or breakfast, but usually tea, so that I can have waffles before or after my appointments!! Haha. And yeah! The beef rendang is super tender and their tempeh is addictive! Haha. Yeah the guys there are so nice they give pretty generous portions. I’d say their food is probably better than the Nasi Padang places around North Bridge Road actually. I heard the old Canteen at the top served up good tong tau foo but unfortch, I never got to try it. =(

But ya! Say Hi the next time round! You going to be there again soon? Hehe. I’m having an appointment next week before I fly off!! Now I sound like a stalker dying to meet you! lol.
